Not only are nuts a delicious way to add texture and flavour to you dish they also boast a heap of nutritional benefits.
Feel fuller, for longer
Adding nuts to carbohydrate rich foods causes a low glycaemic index (GI) effect, meaning you don’t get hungry as quickly after low GI snacks and meals.
Nuts are also great at sending satiety signals to the brain, helping you feel fuller.
Manage weight
People who eat a handful (30g) of nuts each day tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) and better diet quality compared to those who don’t eat them.
Research shows that when a handful of nuts are eaten in a daily Mediterranean diet, the positive impact on GI means fasting insulin and insulin resistance are reduced, which is important for managing weight.
Furthermore, regular nut consumption not only boosts resting metabolic rate by 5-10% but the fibrous walls in nuts help stop the body from absorbing up to 20% of their fat content. So while nuts are high in calories, you don’t absorb all those calories.
Reduce risk of chronic diseases
Nuts provide healthy fats, plant omega-3s and sterols, fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The nutritional cocktail you can get from just a handful of nuts (30g) a day contributes to a healthy heart, lowered cholesterol and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
