Director Sofia Coppola has a new release: A lip balm
Respected director Sofia Coppola has teamed up with luxury skincare brand Augustinus Bader on a range of tinted lip balms.

The director, known for her movies like “Priscilla,” “The Virgin Suicides” and“Lost in Translation,” has overseen a new range of three softly-coloured shades.

Each features the brand’s famous skin-renewing TFC8 technology. This complex, developed by Professor Augustinus Bader, contains amino acids, vitamins and peptides naturally found in the body, that nourish and protect skin while supporting its potential for renewal. The lip balms also contains a hydrating blend of plant-based butters and oils.

Coppola has shared her long obsession with the perfect lip balm, having previously used Bader’s original lip balm.

She says her desire was that the collaboration products mimicked a favoured but long-discontinued lip product that she has been searching for a replacement for.

“My favourite sheer lipstick was from Monoprix in Paris, but then they discontinued it, I had a few last ones that I hoarded,” Coppola told Harper’s Bazaar of the sheer, deep-pink lipstick.

“I am a fan of Augustinus Bader; I love The Rich Cream and the [original] Lip Balm. I wrote a note to Professor Bader asking if they would agree to make my favourite tint with their balm. I was happy when he said yes!”

The Tinted Balm in Shade 1, a sheer, deep pink, Shade 2, a bright red coral and Shade 3, a burnt, earthy plum.

She has included the berry hue, a brightening, subtle tint, as well as a coral hue she says she likes for summer or at the beach, and a burnt, earthy plum hue.

Coppola wore the balms as she attended the annual Met Gala in New York. Makeup artist Dick Page lightly dabbed Shade 2 onto the apples of her cheeks and blended out with a finger for a healthy flush of color. Coppola also applied The Tinted Balm in Shade 1 straight from the tube for a sheer red glow on her lips.

Lip balms, tinted lip oils and nourishing sheer-tinted lip colours are certainly having a moment, so the nourishing colours are certain to find a devoted following.

This launch is Bader’s first step into colour cosmetics, following the release of a tinted priming moisturiser with Victoria Beckham back in 2019.

The three shades will be available at MECCA in Australia and New Zealand from July 30.
