What is latte makeup? The trending look that recalls the sun
Take inspiration from your morning caffeine hit to recreate the latest trending makeup look.

Makeup trends are fickle as they are long lasting. For every fleeting Barbiecore moment there’s a classic red lip or an eyeliner flick.

This season colour themes in makeup seem to be the dominant trend point.

We touched on five key colours making waves in beauty, but we have another to add to the list: latte makeup.

The look is gathering a lot of buzz and while it’s potentially just a rebrand of something we’ve been doing for a while, we’re not adverse to a reminder about how good it is.

What is latte makeup?

Latte makeup is a fun name for a bronzy look that isn’t unheard of when half of the hemisphere is experiencing mid-summer sun. But like all of the cutesy-named beauty trends that seem to be in abundance this year, this one has a twist.

Inspired by your daily caffeine hit, the look refers to makeup crated with varying warm tones of browns, caramel, bronze and nudes.

“Latte make-up is just that: make-up that focuses solely on shades of brown and nudes,” make-up artist Katie Mellinger tells Vogue, saying the trend’s accessibility as a key factor in its popularity.

“It’s super achievable and easy to do – there are no hard edges,” she says. “Also, it can apply to any skin tone. Granted, you have to adjust the shades you are using, going deeper as skin tones get darker, but it can be done on absolutely anyone.”

The term was coined by TikTok creator Rachel Rigler, who referred to a bronzed 2018 look by makeup artist Tanielle Jai as the inspiration for the now-viral trend definition.

The latte look has been recreated widely on social media in recent times, however it is stars like J Lo and Hailey Beiber that really pushed it into the mainstream.

How to create the latte makeup look

If you haven’t just got back from a dreamy jaunt around the azure waters and charming bistros of Europe, you can certainly look like it, by embracing the latte makeup trend.

“What truly sets the latte look apart is its undertones,” Jai explains of the look she created back in 2018 and has more recently created numerous further iterations of on her Instagram.

“The secret lies in bronzers and brown shades that have caramel, yellow and olive undertones, steering away from the warm orange and red undertones often found in typical bronze and brown shades,” she tells Vogue.

In very simple terms, it’s a tone-on-tone brown and bronze look. It also offers the opportunity to sculpt the face with a little contouring, should that be in your skill-set.

Key products include a cream or powder bronzer, softly shimmering bronze eyeshadow and a nude lipstick with pinky-brown tones or a lip liner combined with gloss on top.
