The Surprising Hair Hue That’s Been Named ‘Colour of the Year’
Itching for a makeover? One top hair brand has selected its colour of the year for 2024 and if you're into a bold new move, it will be right up your alley.

Stepping away from more naturally-inspired hair coloured trends like balayage or subtle highlights – like Amal Clooney’s stunning recent update for her rich brunette locks – the colour is a decidedly daring shade.

Goldwell has named a hue it calls ‘Midnight Berry’ as its colour of the year for 2024. The brand explains the shade as a ‘deeply saturated purple that exudes richness and complexity’.

Professional hair care and colour brand Goldwell annually selects a hair hue that encompasses the hottest trend of the moment. It works alongside global trend agencies and colour trend experts pinpoint a shade that it believes will be influential over the coming 12 months. This year, it says a range of deep and dark hair colours known as ‘tinted blacks’ will become increasingly sought-after in salon.

“We carefully selected this captivating shade based on the evolving desire for a new kind of glamour,” the brand said its announcement explaining the choice.

“It’s not the glamour we’re accustomed to; it’s a fusion of darkness and a rebellious spirit, capturing the essence of another one of 2024’s biggest color stories: the rise of tinted blacks.”

Hairstylist and Goldwell Global Ambassador Angelo Seminara agrees it’s not for the shy and retiring: “Midnight Berry offers endless possibilities for self-expression. It’s a shade that truly stands out in a crowd.“

In a move that foreshadowed the huge popularity of red and copper hair looks, last year the brand chose a deep, rich warm red it called ‘Cherry Pop’, as 2023 Colour of the Year. In 2022 it embraced the candy floss hair moment of 2022 (which Kylie Jenner has just returned to) with a soft pink hair look it dubbed ‘Bubblegum’.

Is a deep purple hue on the cards for your ‘do in 2024?
