Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala dress included 50,000 freshwater pearls
This year Kim Kardashian's Met Gala red carpet turn was eye-popping yet again, thanks to an astonishing pearl-bedecked gown.

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to making a splash at each year’s Met Gala events.

At her first appearance at the exclusive Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute fundraiser back in 2013, the then-pregnant Kardashian wore a floral-print gown and gloves by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. Fashion critics were divided and Kardashian later admitted she cried over the response it got.

“I was crying, like, the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it,” Kardashian subsequently told Vogue in a video looking back on her famous outfits. “There were all these memes about me and this couch,” she recalled. “I think Robin Williams even tweeted it, said I looked like Mrs Doubtfire.”

Last year her look also received a divided reception, when the star famously wore Marilyn Monroe’s rhinestone-studded Happy Birthday, Mr. President dress, which she borrowed from Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.

This year her look for New York event was equally show-stopping. With the charity-event dedicated to an exhibition honoring the legacy of designer Karl Lagerfeld, many guests chose outfits that included a nod to the late Chanel creative director.

Kardashian arrived on the red carpet in a custom Schiaparelli gown. Numerous strands of pearls covered a nude-coloured corset with more wrapped from the hips, functioning as a full-length skirt.

Vogue reports the gown, created by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli, included 50,000 freshwater pearls from head to toe.  It also reportedly included 16,000 crystals and took one-dozen artisans 1,000 hours to craft.

She finished the look with a sweeping white cape coat.

“I wanted pearls, I thought what is more Karl [than] the iconic Chanel pearls?” Kardashian told Vogue red carpet hosts Chloe Fineman and Derek Blasberg. “I wanted to be dripping in pearls.”

The dress wasn’t without its challenges however.

“Some [pearls] popped on the way,” she admitted during the livestreamed arrivals. “I told my daughter [North West] to grab them all. They’re real pearls, and she was putting them all in her purse.”

Kardashian paired the look with a towering up-do created by celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton.

The stylist, who recently married The White Lotus actor Lukas Gage at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, revealed the steps taken and products used to craft the glamourous style.

Appleton, who is Color Wow Global Creative Director, used Color Wow products, first prepping her hair with the brand’s iconic Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray to ensure hair was ultra smooth, glossy and frizz free.

For maximum volume, he then applied Color Wow Raise the Root Thicken and Lift Spray throughout the root area and blow dried with a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, manipulating hair in the opposite direction to add extra height and movement.

Styling with a Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener, section by section he wrapped hair around the iron to create curls, while polishing the fringe in front that is left out.

Without brushing the curls out, he spritzed with a texturizing spray like Color Wow Style On Steroids and pinned up into a modern-day French twist before finishing with hairspray.
