The first Monday in May is known as the biggest date on the fashion calendar.
The annual Met Gala, a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, regularly sees the who’s who of the fashion, celebrity and music worlds’ converge on the red carpet.
And so it was again this year, with the glitzy event celebrating the focus of 2023’s Costume Institute exhibition: Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
The German fashion designer and creative director, who died on February 19, 2019 aged 85, was known for his work as creative director of Chanel, working with the brand for more than 35 years, as well as stints at Balmain, Chloe and Fendi.
Hosted as usual by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, along with this year’s co-hosts Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer and Dua Lipa, the night was largely a tribute to Lagerfeld, evidenced in the dress code as invitees were asked to dress ‘in honour of Karl’.
Fittingly, the red carpet was awash with black, white and tweed, with a host of the designer’s vintage garments appearing on stars arriving for the event. The odd pop of colour was generally in the form of blush, red or pink hues.
Tributes also came in less traditional forms, as was the case for Jared Leto, who dressed up in a furry cat suit as an ode to Lagerfeld’s famous white cat Choupette.
A number of stars were dressed by Gucci for the event, including L-R: Jessica Chastain, Halle Bailey, Sienna Miller and Idris and Sabrina Elba. Images courtesy Gucci.
