Dyson unveils new hairdryer, here’s why you won’t be able to buy it

Dyson unveils new hairdryer, here’s why you won’t be able to buy it
Dyson has revealed its latest hairdryer model, but the unique design won't be available for public consumers. Instead, it's a pro-only version.

Skincare research and development sometimes grabs all the attention when it comes to new beauty releases, but right now, it’s hair tech in the spotlight.

As always, Dyson is making waves with a release that looks nothing like the hair heat styling tools we all know and love.

The experts in air flow technology have previously turned the brand’s Air Wrap Multi-Styler into a viral hair-styling phenomenon, with one tool to dry, smooth or curl hair. But it was Dyson’s first hair tool release, the Supersonic hairdryer, that changed the game in 2016 with it’s unique ring-shaped head, quiet motor and fast-drying results that are said to be less drying and damaging than traditional dryers.

Now, that Supersonic has had a surprising overhaul, with new model, The Dyson Supersonic r Hair Dryer, revealed backstage during Christian Siriano’s show at New York Fashion Week.

Before you get too excited, let us be the bearers of bad news: As the new design has been created with professional hair stylists in mind, at this stage the brand says it will only be available to purchase by salon and editorial professionals.

The Dyson Supersonic r Hair Dryer has a stand that holds some of its 5 new styling attachments.

The Dyson Supersonic r Hair Dryer has a new curved ‘periscope-like’ handpiece and it’s smallest, lightest design yet. The brand says its 30% smaller, 20% lighter, and more manoeuvrable than it’s predecessor because it was designed for those who work with heat-styling tools all day and often experience arm, hand and wrist strain from moving the tools around client’s heads.

With a stylist typically seeing between 4-16 clients each day, spending on average 30 – 60 minutes styling per client, and adapting their angle up to 30 times during one styling session according to Dyson, it’s fair to say we can see the need!

Showing off its tech credentials, the new r-shaped hairdryer has a new technology streamlined heater, the Dyson HyperdymiumTM motor and intelligent Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors in each attachment which communicate with the hair dryer, automatically adjusting the motor and heater to deliver optimal airflow and temperature.

Stylist Lacy Redway uses the new Dyson Supersonic r Hair Dryer on a model backstage at Christian Siriano’s New York Fashion Week show.

Featuring 5 new attachments, the Dyson Supersonic r Professional hair dryer is paired with three precise airflow settings and four heat modes, including constant cold shot, with ergonomically placed controls within a thumb’s reach and LED indicators on the handle.

Sounds incredibly appealing doesnt it? The r Hair Dryer will be available to purchase exclusively by professional stylists from June 2024.

For the rest of us? We’ll just have to hope the updates are carried over into a consumer-focused version that will soon be more widely available.
