Dyson’s updated Airwrap is a multi-tasking, hairstyling hero for all hair types

Dyson’s updated Airwrap is a multi-tasking, hairstyling hero for all hair types

There is no mention of game-changing hair tools, without including Dyson’s Airwrap™. When it was first released by the pioneering technology company in 2018 it left many of us gobsmacked.

We knew the company had expertise with airflow – Dyson’s Vacuums were already hot property – but this tool used air to style hair in a way that almost seemed too good to be true. It was like nothing we’d ever seen before, but the way it made styling easy, with salon-worthy results, was next level.

Needless to say hairstylists, beauty editors and beauty enthusiasts were desperate to get their hands on it. Hell, even novices were chuffed by the way it made smoothing, and curling hair like a pro, so much easier and more achievable than before. It’s remained incredibly popular – not to mention a viral star on social media platforms – ever since. The Dyson Airwrap hashtag has over 2.5 billion views on TikTok and counting!

Airwrap™ multi-styler a personalisable styling tool

Not content to rest on their laurels, the company has just released a new version with a high-tech upgrade that builds on what came before. Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler is an evolution of the original Airwrap™ (known as the Dyson Airwrap™ Styler Complete), but with a generous number of new features and attachments that give even more versatility to what it can do. We’re not kidding when we say this tool is the Swiss army knife of hair!

The new options make it a more inclusive tool, with the ability to choose which attachments suit your own particular hair type.

Already jumped on the original? The new attachments can be purchased separately or in a set and work with the Airwrap™ you already have.

The thing that made the original Airwrap™ so unique and innovative was its use of a powerful digital motor V9 and an aerodynamic technique known as the Coanda effect. With years of research and development and millions of dollars of investment, Dyson’s engineers had uncovered a way to curve air around a surface, taking hair with it, in the process making it easier for those of us that found drying and styling, in particular curling, tricky. Even better, it did so without resorting to extreme heat, to preserve hair health.

The new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler sticks with that concept, so much of the tool will look familiar. But even recognisable parts, like the interchangeable barrels, have been re-engineered for even better performance.

Crucially, though the original works on a range of hair types already, the new version caters to an even wider range, giving more options for everyone. It works on a wider number of textures and can create a wider scope of styles than its predecessor, unlike many other tools that often only work for one hair type.

Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, Dyson’s global styling ambassador says: “Now, the tool does even more, allowing owners to personalise to suit their styling preferences, personalised for their hair type. You can ensure every attachment in your box delivers your desired style, specific to your hair type. Something you thought couldn’t get better, just did.”

So what’s new in the case?

The Airwrap™ Multi Styler comes with 6 attachments, with more available to purchase direct on Dyson.co.nz that are compatible with the original machine. These new additions include a wide-tooth comb for coiled and curly hair, small smoothing brushes for short hair and fringes and a small volumising brush, again for shorter hair lengths and detailing areas.

The Coanda smoothing dryer – This all-new attachment can quickly take hair from wet to damp in pre-style mode, prepping to create curls or waves, or finish a sleek style by using Dyson’s signature airflow to hide flyaways and frizz in a single pass in smoothing mode. It’s useful for achieving those coveted smooth, high-gloss styles you’d pay a pro for in the salon, but at home, and with no extreme heat.

Direction change styling barrels Blending the results formerly achieved with two barrels into one, you can now create clockwise and anticlockwise curls and waves, without the need to remove and change the attachment. The new barrels have a cool tip which you hold onto and twist to rotate, then keep styling. This means you can do those flicked-out curtain bangs on both sides in seconds. The kit comes in two formats, one for long hair below shoulder-length and one for short hair, above the shoulders. Each kit comes with a 30mm and 40mm barrel included. You can also purchase a newly engineered 20mm Airwrap™ barrel for hair that doesn’t retain curls well or you want to create a tighter style, again available only direct through Dyson.

New smoothing brushes – Designed to easily create a straight, smooth ‘blow out’- like finish, the included Soft smoothing brush works its magic on fine hair while the Firm Smoothing brush creates a straighter style with less frizz and has firmer bristles engineered to control unruly, frizz-prone hair. These brushes also use the Coanda effect to attract hair to the surface of the brush, propelling air along the hair strands for that beautiful finish.

How to achieve a bouncy blow dry

Given stars like Adele have re-popularised a smooth, bouncy blow dry, we took some tips from Amy Johnson, Dyson Global Education Manager, on how to use the new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler to get this look.

“The volumising brush attachment for the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler helps to achieve a professional blow-wave result at home, adding volume, lifting each section up at the root, and giving the control you need to add body and shape to smaller pieces,” says Johnson.

“For shorter hair styles, the small round volumising brush will be your best friend – giving the control you need to add body and shape to smaller pieces.“

She advises starting with freshly washed hair and pre-drying hair to damp with the Coanda smoothing dryer in the Drying mode. The other mode is the Smoothing mode and can be used to hide flyaways as a final step.

“Then, section your hair with clips and attach the best round volumising brush attachment for your hair type, and set to medium power and medium heat, ” she explains.

“Brush through each section in a smooth pass, lifting sections up at the root to add volume. To nail that signature Cindy Crawford-esque shape, use the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler round brush attachment to wrap the ends of hair, so it curves slightly in towards the face. Hold until the hair is fully dry, and give it a few seconds of the cool shot to lock it in.”

She says the best part is that since you’re not exposing your hair to damaging heat levels, your hair will stay strong and keep its healthy shine, which is key to this classic look.

  • The new Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler is priced at $999, available from Dyson.co.nz and from July 7 at other key retailers. When purchasing from Dyson direct, new attachments are fully compatible with existing Airwraps, and you can upgrade your full set for $299.
