In Thailand, blue is associated with Friday, and anyone born on Friday may adopt blue as their colour. When it comes to colour blocking, you don’t always have to wear separates. Try a solid hue teamed with a contrasting accessory; blue’s primary complementary colour is red.

In Russia, the word red can mean beautiful, and is the colour most commonly found in national flags. As pink is just a lighter shade of red these colours work perfectly together; but stick to solid blocks of colour, not prints.

Black is associated with sophistication and elegance and also stands for secrecy. Try teaming hues from the same family such as royal or powder blue and turquoise together. Accessorise with black to give the look depth for winter and a chic contrast.

Purple is considered a royal colour, and it is said that even the Egyptian queen Cleopatra loved the colour. Colour matching is a subtle version of blocking and works best if you mix up textures such as a high sheen dress with matt-fabric stockings.

In ancient Greece, green symbolised victory and is also considered to be a healing colour. Wearing green and red together might seem like you are going against the grain, but they are complementary on the colour wheel. By wearing them with a bare leg in between, it separates the hues that would otherwise give a festive feel.
