Yes, the Met Gala is often referred to as the Oscars of fashion. What its celebrity guests are wearing to the famed charity event and who their outfits were designed by, are always the first topics of conversation.
But those of us that are enamored with inventive and trending hair, makeup and manicure looks, the beauty details certainly come a close second.
Given the event comes with a theme, and guests may or may not put effort into channeling that theme, the beauty looks can be varied.
This year the theme of the exhibition being held at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is In America: An Anthology of Fashion. The Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, and hence invites have been sent with a dress code of ‘Gilded Glamour’ and white tie, a nod to a period on America’s history said to particularly reference the years between 1870 to 1890.
It’s why you’ll have seen varying vintage and historical references on the red carpet, including some that seem plucked straight from the set of Bridgerton. Although the TV series is set in the earlier Regency era of 1811 to 1820, so strictly speaking referencing the hit show is off the cards.
We digress, but the beauty looks, much like the outfits, varied from charming references like powdered skin and a draping of pink blush to no discernable reference at all. Some preferred to take more modern reference points. Even those 90s-throwback updos with tendrils making waves everywhere from Coachella to the Oscars were in abundance.
Without further ado, here are the beauty looks making a head-turning statement – for one reason or other – at this year’s Met Gala.
