We’re sorry if you’re cringing at the memory, but it seems long hair is going up and the look is everywhere. Just don’t forget those trailing tendrils!
While select celebrities have been embracing a soft but often elaborate updo for a while, it’s now going mainstream, according to an expert.
In 2022 Kim Kardashian was accused of ‘ripping off’ Pamela Anderson’s iconic, piled-up 90s do, and we were beginning to see a similar look emerge on last year’s Oscars and Cannes red carpets, but according to hair expert Tom Smith, we’re about to see a new wave of the style.
One key image has gone viral in conjunction with the trend, actress Anya Taylor-Joy’s high platinum knot created by celebrity stylist Gregory Russell for the recent Critics Choice Awards.
“This season we’re really seeing a surge of detailed, ornate hair-up styles. I’m calling it ‘prom hair’ because it is so that. It’s pretty and decorative and the bigger, the bolder the better,” shares Smith, who is creative director for Evo Hair.
The stylist name checks actress Lily James Anya Taylor-Joy and singer Jessie Ware as recent examples of those rocking the look.
Smith suggests for a perfectly polished style you’ll need to head to a salon and seek a stylist with relevant experience.
“It takes a lot of craft and a lot of skill as a hairstylist to create many of these intricate updos that we’re seeing.
“I’m really happy that the craft of hairdressing is on display at the moment,” he says, referring to the way more stars are choosing involved hair styles over a relaxed soft wave that had previously dominated.
