Five minutes with: Gareth Chitty

By Milly Nolan

Gareth Chitty is a sought after Auckland hair stylist and owner of boutique hair salon Gareth & Co in the heart of Grey Lynn, on MiNDFOOD.

What trends are we seeing in hair colour this spring?

Colours are either rich, dark chocolatey browns or blondes mixed with coppers and strawberry tones.

What about hair length?

Hair length trends seems to be in the “bob” family and fringes are making a statement too. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and ask your stylist to work their magic on a style you’ve always been too scared to try. It’s not a tattoo.

The change of season is the perfect time for a new hair style. Where should someone get their inspiration from?

Flicking through magazines and looking at celebrity hair styles is always a good idea. TV is also a good place to find ideas.

Where do you gain your inspiration from?

The Hollywood A-list are often leading the fashion stakes so I make sure I always follow who is wearing and doing what. I think Katie Holmes is leading the way at the moment as her hair always looks healthy and well styled. She also experiments quite a bit with her length now that she has lost her school girl looks and hairstyle. It’s a brave thing to do when you are always in front of the paparazzi.

How can you keep you hair looking healthy and in good condition?

With all the regular colouring, blow-drying, over-washing and use of hot tools to get your hair looking great all the time, it’s no wonder your hair becomes susceptible to damage.

So it’s crucial to take steps to restore your hair back to its original condition. Conditioning hair is key because it closes the hair shaft after washing which protects the hair from the elements. Regular hair treatments are also vital for the hair health. Be sure you don’t over wash your hair because this can take away the hair’s natural oil and exposes the hair and scalp to the rigours of drying and daily life.

What are your favourite hair products at the moment?

One of the easiest ways to care for your hair is to go easy on the straightening irons and give it a break from the hairdryer every now and then. In these tough economic times when people are watching their spending Pantene Nourished Shine is a fantastic cost effective option and convenient enough to pick up from the supermarket if you get caught short.

Interestingly in an unbranded trial seven out of 10 beauty experts said the products improved the appearance and feel of hair and made it healthy looking, that they could see visible results and would recommend it to friends and family.

How did you get your hands on the likes of Sohpie Dahl, Jodie Kidd and Sacha Baron Cohen? What were they like?

This was when I was a member of the Charles Worthington International Artistic team working on London Fashion Week and Sacha was just booked in for a cut in the salon. I had no idea who he was at the time. I have to say they all very regular, laid back type, no pretentious behaviour whatsoever.

If you could choose one celebrity’s hair to cut and colour, who would it be and what would you do?

It would have to be Linda Evangelista. She is so adventurous with her hair and I’d love to take her back to the blonde she had in the George Michael clip in the early ’90s, with a really sharp asymmetrical bob. Stunning!
