Body mist is back in style and it’s all grown up

Body mist is back in style and it’s all grown up
The revival of body mists provides a perfume alternative for summer days and those that like a lighter scent.

The beauty of the fragrance category’s evolution is that there is now a far wider variety of forms to embrace scent than just a simple eau de parfum.

One surprising approach we never thought would have such a revival is body sprays and mists.

While it might stir memories of the juvenile spritzes that made our first perfume experiences, these days current fragrance houses are offering them as simply another form of your favourite scent. The good news is, they’re not always the ultra-sweet and fruity mixes popular in the past.

“Body mists are meant to be a carefree way to wear fragrance. The scents tend to be less complex and lower in concentration than an eau de parfum,” Bee Shapiro, founder of Ellis Brooklyn told Fashionista. Like many brands currently, Shapiro  introduced body spray into Ellis Brooklyn as a seasonal alternative to cloying perfume.

“I was looking to launch something that captured the joy of summer, and body mists are an approachable way for anyone to experience pleasurable scent.”

Must-have Body Mists

Best Body Mists 2024

L-R: Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 68 Perfume Mist; Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Body Spray; Rare Beauty Find Comfort Body & Hair Fragrance Mist; Ellis Brooklyn Sand Fragrance Mist; The Body Shop Glowing Cherry Blossom Mist; Dior Miss Dior Silky Body Mist

Indeed, the likes of Tom Ford’s very concentrated eau de parfums may be too much in the heat, but some of Ford’s top selling scents have now been created in body spray and body mist form. They last surprisingly well and are a good introduction to the pricey but gorgeous iconic summer scents, like Neroli Portofino and Soleil Blanc.

Bodycare brand Sol De Janeiro – famed for its rich, hydrating ‘Bum Bum’ body cream with its captivating scent of pistachio, salted caramel, and vanilla, has developed a line of perfume mists with similar sweet but undeniably head-turning fragrance blends. They have quickly become a favourite for summer, in particular limited edition releases like this season’s ‘After Hours’ a mix of heady jasmine and wood notes.

Pure Fiji’s also infuses delectable fruity notes into its hydrating body sprays, lovely to mist on damp skin after a shower.

Dedicated hair mists are another newer way to embrace scent without spraying it on your skin and they wont dry out your strands like traditional EDPs made with alchohol.

If you still favour a classic perfume but want something slightly lighter this time of year, look for releases with sunny ‘solar’ notes or airy water notes.

New floral-aquatic scent A Drop d’Issey Eau de Parfum Essentielle by Issey Miyake brings to mind morning dew on new blooms, blending green notes and a touch of lilac and magnolia. Overall it’s intended to convey the idea of water drops evaporating through the sunlight, a lovely concept for wearing in fresh and bright weather.

And if personal scent isn’t for you? There are now more ways than ever to elevate the fragrance of your home.
