After years of speculation, it’s finally been confirmed: Swedish furniture store Ikea is opening in New Zealand.
Ikea’s worldwide franchise holder Inter Ikea Systems has announced it is looking at entering the New Zealand market, although a location is yet to be announced.
Love it or hate it, NZ Herald reports that developers had been eyeing a greenfields site of 5ha-plus – meaning a mega mall-like store could be on the cards.
In a statement, the retail operations manager for Ingka Group Tolga Oncu said the company is happy to meet the wish of many New Zealanders for Ikea to open here.
“We aim to make IKEA fully accessible, including stores and ecommerce. We see this as a long-term commitment and investment in New Zealand, building relationships with customers, suppliers and future co-workers.”
Ikea was founded in Sweden in 1943.
