Studio Italia’s top 2020 design trends

Studio Italia design manager Joanna Hoeft reveals the latest kitchen design trends that are sure to make an impression.

What’s one of your top design trends for 2020?

I love glossy lacquers for doors – which we haven’t seen much in the last few years. This refined finish combined with textured and organic timbers is a timeless combination that will suit most architectural styles.

What changes are you seeing in kitchen design?

Irregular shapes are now being used for the barstool area – think elliptical timber elements and round or oval tables. This creates a more fluid design and a friendlier space for socialising.

When should you go for gloss cabinetry and when should you opt for matte?

Whether you pick glossy or matte cabinets really comes down to personal preference. However, we would generally only recommend light to mid tones in the glossy finish, as darker colours become too reflective. Black cabinetry in a matte nano technology laminate such as Fenix will provide the most durable finish in the darker colours.

What’s new in technology in kitchen design?

The biggest changes we’re seeing in kitchen technology are around the appliances – for example, we’re just loving the new induction cooktops with integrated downdraft extractions systems. Great examples are available from Miele and Boma. Not so new but now included in almost every kitchen we design are the ‘all-in-one’ kitchen taps that provide boiling, chilled, sparkling and normal hot and cold water.
