Inquisitive, cheeky and sharp-minded, the Kea has long been a much-loved native New Zealand bird. Now the green mountain parrot has been crowned Bird of the Year for 2017.
There are only 3000-7000 Kea left today, due to a growing number of predators as well as climate change and lead poisoning. Some Kea also suffer illness and death from being fed human food.
Now classified as Nationally Endangered, a third of Keas face extinction if their protection is not increased.
The Bird of the Year competition aims to celebrate New Zealand’s unique birdlife and raise support for those that are vulnerable or worse. Last year the beloved Kōkako won Bird of the Year.
