Here’s what we know so far about the new instalment.
Anne Hathaway to star
Anne Hathaway has confirmed she will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, sharing the news with a video on social media.

The announcement comes after the star updated fans about the film in April, telling V magazine development was coming along well.
“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
Adele Lim to direct
Adele Lim – known for films Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon – has signed on to direct. The original 2001 film was directed by Garry Marshall, who passed away in 2016.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement.
“We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Julie Andrews to return?
It hasn’t been confirmed whether Julie Andrews will star in the upcoming film.
She said in 2022 that her return to the role of Queen Clarisse Renaldi is “probably not going to be possible”.
But the most recent update came in March this year, when she sounded open to the idea… somewhat.
“It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone,” she said on Today.
“I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ’til it’s dead. I’d be very happy if we did do another one. But I don’t expect to.”
Hathaway has always been hopeful – she told Entertainment Tonight in 2022 she wanted to “make it happen”.
“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,” she said.
“We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
Screenwriter confirmed
Variety reports that Flora Greeson is writing the script. While plot details haven’t been confirmed, it’s believed the new film will continue the story from 2001’s The Princess Diaries and 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
