5 smart energy-saving tips at home
As we head into the winter season, it's no surprise that energy bills start to soar along with the dropping temperatures.

However, there’s good news: you can take simple yet effective steps to reduce your power consumption and keep costs under control. By implementing energy-saving practices and making a few adjustments around your home, you can enjoy a cozy winter while also saving money on your utility bills.

Check out our smart energy-saving tips:

While an increase in power is a given in the colder months, there are lots of simple things you can do to save on power and keep costs down.

Keep the cold out and the heat in

However you’re heating your home, it’s always useful to stop the heat from getting out.

Windows and doors are common problem areas when it comes to losing heat. Draw curtains as the sun is setting to keep the day’s heat in.

Check for draughts around doors and windows too, you can use tape or draught stoppers to fix any gaps.

Save on water

We all love a long, hot shower on a cold morning but try to be mindful of your shower time.

According to Energywise, a family of four could save $900 a year but keeping showers to around 5 minutes.

When it comes to washing your clothes, try use cold washes if you don’t have a particularly dirt load.

Hot water washes can use 10 times more energy than a cold wash.

Be smart with heating

Set your heater’s thermostat to around 18 to 20˚C, that’s typically the most comfortable temperature.

If you’re trying to heat your living areas, close doors to empty rooms so it can heat quickly without losing too much energy.

And remember to turn off heaters when you leave the house.

Replace old lightbulbs

Old, inefficient lightbulbs can be a big energy drain. Switch to energy-efficient LED lightbulbs instead.

While a little more expensive, they can save you around $100 a year on power bills.

And remember to switch off lights when you’re not using them.

Turn off appliances

It may seem like a little thing, but unused appliances left on standby can cut into your monthly power bill.

TVs, gaming consoles, computers, turn them off when you’re not using them.

Any easy way to do this is by plugging them all into a multi-board so you only have one switch to turn off.
