What is the ‘recession lip’? One beauty expert explains
It's time to go deep with our lip colour. That’s according to lipstick creator Karen Murrell.

The Kiwi that has lead the way for clean beauty in New Zealand since establishing her popular natural lipstick line in 2008, is tipping deeper and stronger lip hues to dominate the coming season.

The lipstick queen has just returned from a period in New York and says indications there, and discussions with fellow industry experts, support her prediction.

“A common topic of discussion was that darker times often correlate to darker makeup looks, and our lip colour choices are deeper and bolder than we have seen for quite some time,” Murrell says.

“Our clothing and makeup choices often reflect how our internal world is feeling, I have coined this the ‘recession lip’ as I’ve pondered the correlation that as global financial confidence has dipped our lip colour perhaps becomes stronger as our own silent protest or display of personal power”.

She says winter trends in the US included darker coffee hues and deep cherry cola tones, and burgundy-toned browns through to cool, blue-based reds, something likely to flow though here for our cooler winter season

“I also noticed slightly smudged rather than perfectly drawn edges we’ve become used to. Emily Ratajkowski wears this look perfectly, it sends a subliminal message that reflects that
nothing is perfect in the world presently,” explains Murrell.

The beauty creator says while its important to pick and choose the trends that feel authentic to us individually, if you want to, selecting shades that flatter our features is empowering.

She suggests those with warm, yellow undertones to their skin can opt for lip shades like rich cherry reds and warm, earthy-based brown and cola hues while cooler undertones look great with a blue-based reds and burgundies and cooler toned rich coffee hues.
