The winner of this year’s L’Oreal Style & Colour Trophy has shown just how advanced stylists, their hair colouring techniques, and the products used to create them, have become.
Hair stylists and colourist are adept at their craft, but it’s still amazing to see what the top stylists in New Zealand can create, with beautiful glowing colour that looks vibrant and seamless.
The L’Oreal Style & Colour Trophy gives hair stylists and colour experts the opportunity to create a look that showcases exceptional technique and forward-focussed trend ideas that are judged by a team of fellow industry professionals. Local versions of the awards are held around the world and New Zealand’s trophy for 2022 has just been announced.
This year stylist Kelly Manu of Una Salon in Auckland took out the top prize of National Grand Winter for her luxurious blended ‘salted caramel’ hair colour look with a smooth, voluminous blow-dry. The look she created as her entry to the competition is seen above. The look she re-created on the live judging day to take out the win is seen below.

The People’s Choice Award was taken out by Jazmyne Van Gosliga of Studio Gloss in Auckland for a sun-kissed golden colour with a slight gradient on a cropped bob.
The awards ceremony was held via online presentation this year, with finalists’ looks being displayed before the winners were announced via a live stream.
This year entrants were challenged to create a style in line with the theme of ‘French Edito’ with a look that would be at home on the cover of a magazine and uses French-inspired colour trends and techniques including French Glossing or French Balayage.
Entrants were required to create and post their look on their Instagram platforms, including before and after images of their model’s look, before six finalists were selected to undertake a live recreation of their look in front of a panel of judges on judging day.
According to the L’Oreal Style & Colour Trophy website, French Glossing is a new salon color service, for gradient color with an exclusive glossing treatment. ‘The professional 2-step technique achieves perfect root coverage and weightless glossy lengths.’
French Balayage is a ‘professional 2-step technique associating seamless lightening to a nourishing gloss. Always natural looking, whatever your balayage desire.’
