Researchers have suggested that clutter, as well as a lack of organisation does more to our psyche and general wellbeing than initially thought. The team at Princeton University used functional MRI and other techniques to track how the brain responded to clutter or overstimulation – caused by chaos and unorganised mess.
Dr Sarah McKay, an Australian neuroscientist stated that the reason for this. It came down to the way our brain processes information. When there are multiple channels of information all competing for the same amount of recognition, our brain can become overwhelmed and overstimulated.
“When objects were grouped rather than scattered, there was less competition between brain areas,” McKay explained.
“Or in other words, visual chaos makes it harder to focus because the brain is trying to process too many information streams.”
Having too much stuff in your house can lead to clutter, stress, and a feeling of overwhelm.

- Unused Items: If you have items in your home that you haven’t used or even thought about in years, it’s a clear sign of excess. Keeping things “just in case” can lead to a cluttered home.
- Dust and Dirt Accumulation: Too many items can make it difficult to clean and dust properly. If you notice that dust and dirt seem to accumulate quickly and you struggle to keep up with cleaning, it could be because you have too much stuff.
- Stress and Anxiety: A cluttered home can lead to stress and anxiety. If you find that you’re often overwhelmed by the mess and disorganisation, it may be time to declutter and simplify your space.
- Financial Strain: If you’re spending a significant portion of your income on storage solutions, like renting storage units or buying more furniture to accommodate your stuff, it’s a sign that you have too much. This can put unnecessary financial strain on you.
