The 2017 Melbourne Cup kicked off with all the usual fervour. Rekindling ridden by Corey Brown took the win, crossing the finish line ahead of Johannes Vermeer, ridden by Ben Melham and Max Dynamite, ridden byZac Purton. The race is Brown’s second Melbourne Cup win.
Marmelo was the favourite for the race, with last year’s winner Almandin and Humidor following closely behind. Veteran race horse Who Shot Thebarman was scratched from the race due to an unusually high temperature.
While the premium race began at 3pm, there are 10 races in total throughout the day, with the final race scheduled to end at 5.15pm.
