The essential Autumn beauty checklist to update your routine

Let’s face it, as summer begins to fade, many of us choose to neglect our once thorough warm-weather beauty routine.

As the cooler weather sees us consider retreating into slightly more clothing layers, we are all guilty of being lulled into a false sense of beauty security – with many choosing to neglect the parts of our bodies that are no longer on show.

To add to that, all that sun, sand, surf and partying from summer has left our best assets looking and feeling a bit flat. But it need not be that way especially when the urge to shed some skin hits us on those amazingly beautiful warm autumn days.

Here are some easy approaches – and the products that really work – to inform your autumn beauty approach.

Parched skin

Murad Vita-C Triple Exfoliating Facial, $139, L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Serum, $49.99, Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, $82

If you spent much of summer outdoors, chances are you may be experiencing some rough-to-the-touch skin. Consider a facial treatment from a skin specialist like a microdermabrasion that deep-cleans, exfoliates, reduces congestion and improves texture. Alternatively, choose an at-home treatment with similar intentions with Vitamin C to brighten and even out skin tone, followed up by layering hydrating serum and moisturiser. This will keep skin supple and protect your skin’s barrier from the wind and fluctuating temperatures. In addition, remember to keep up with internal hydration. While you may not feel the need for H20, your body still needs it, so keep a bottle handy at all times.

Body boost

Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Exfoliating Body Treatment, $98, Drunk Elephant Sugared Koffie Almond Milk Scrub, $48, Sol de Janeiro Bom Dia Bright Cream, $76

We spend so much time and effort nurturing the skin on our faces we sometimes overlook the rest of our skin, especially when it’s covered with heavier clothing layers come cooler weather. Resolve to do better by indulging in one of the advanced new bodycare items that take tips from our favourite facial skincare products, with AHAs to increase cell turnover and rid dry flaky skin and the likes of hyaluronic acid for deep, nourishing hydration that keeps your body soft and silky.

Rough feet

Organik Botanik Peppermint Foot Scrub, $14.95, Simply Essential Pumice with handle, $8.95, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Intensive Moisturizing Hand Treatment, $44

Those gorgeous summer sandals and flip-flops sure had a thorough work-out this year, and you may be considering adding some socks to your Birkenstocks. While you may choose to forgo the salon pedicure this season in favour of woolly socks and boots, don’t forget that special event or heel-wearing occasion that could be looming. Rather than hiding your scaly feet in shame, invest in a foot file or pumice stone and use it daily after showering, to scrub the dead skin away. Moisturising a rich cream into your feet before you jump into bed will also ensure your tootsies look their absolute best, and make the transition into the warmer months easier than ever.

Dry lips

MAC Glow Play Lip Balm in Floral Coral, $35, Bondi Sands Lip Balm SPF 50+ in Juicy Watermelon, $6.99, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lip Barrier Repairing Balm, $16.99

Lips are particularly susceptible to irritation and dryness because of their delicate nature in comparison to other areas of the face. Invest in a well-formulated, hydrating balm that has enough natural oils to keep your lips soft and kissable throughout the coming months and protect from whipping winter winds. New tinted options mean you don’t have to forgo colour or shine. Another great trick is to gently rub your toothbrush over your lips when brushing your teeth in the mornings. This will promote new skin cell regeneration and sweep away flakes of dead skin.

Lacklustre hair

Schwarzkopf Extra Care Hair Repair Serum in Mask, $20.99, Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil, $91, Redken Color Extend Blondage Color Depositing Shampoo, $35

Salt-water or chlorine from all those summer days, as well as the harsh effects of the sun have left your hair dry and brittle. Choose a hydrating shampoo and conditioner that suit your hair type as well as using an additional rich conditioning treatment, or mask once a week. A touch of hair oil on the ends of locks can bring back moisture and shine and smooth split ends. Your hair colour may also be leaving much to be desired with UV damage fading hair colour so it might be time for a colour freshen up. If you can’t get to the salon try a colour refreshing shampoo. If your blonde is looking brassy, a purple shampoo once a week will help.
