George and Charlotte may have stolen the hearts of the public, but according to Matt Smith, Prince Philip holds a few accolades of his own.

Meghan may be at the centre of many news stories, but it’s the Duke of Edinburgh who is apparently the most popular among royal staff.

Matt Smith, the actor who played Prince Philip in the highly acclaimed Netflix series, The Crown, had to do a lot of research on his character and discovered a few heart-warming truths.

According to Smith, the Duke of Edinburgh, 97, is “the one they all love” because he is a “man of the people”.

The star, 35, also speculated Prince Philip had not let himself be “dogged” by royal protocol in the same way that other members of the family had.

As reported by Mirror Online, Smith recounted a time when a friend of his was lucky enough to have dinner with the Duke of Edinburgh, husband to Queen Elizabeth II, and took the opportunity to ask if he’d seen Smith in The Crown. Unsurprisingly, the Royal – famous for his eccentric, unfiltered comments – had a hilarious reply, telling Smith’s friend, “Don’t be ridiculous”.

The Queen, on the other hand, apparently does follow the show. It’s rumoured other royals do too.
