The best after-sun products to soothe and cool skin

Skincare for sunburn
Quickly calm and cool skin after a day at the beach or in the sun with dedicated after-sun skincare.

It’s happened to the best of us. We get lax on re-applying sunscreen or simply have a long-hot and fun day in the sun.

Then, we start feeling the effects. Often this includes hot, prickly-feeling skin and the first signs of redness that indicate a burn.

Even if you’ve not overdone it, a day spent at the beach can leave skin feeling parched and rough and in need of nourishment and coddling.

This is when it’s a great idea to reach for a dedicated after-sun skincare product.

Many contain extracts of aloe vera, which the American Academy of Dermatology says is one way you can help soothe sunburned skin.

Aloe vera is a succulent plant with thick, fleshy leaves that contain a gel-like substance which is widely used in skincare. Besides containing essential vitamins and minerals its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties feels fresh and cooling on skin and helps reduce inflammation.

If skin feels too tender to touch, try misting on a calming face mist or body spray like those from Avene or La Roche-Posay that contain thermal spring water known to help calm angry and irritated skin.

How to use after-sun products

After-sun products are used to soothe and moisturise the skin after sun exposure. Here’s how to use them effectively:

Cool down
After being in the sun, take a cool shower or bath to gently cleanse the skin and cool down your body temperature.

Pat dry
Gently pat your skin dry with a towel, leaving a bit of moisture on your skin.

Apply after-sun product
Take a generous amount of after-sun lotion or gel and apply it evenly to the exposed areas of your skin. Focus on areas that might be more sunburned or feel dry.

Massage in
Gently massage the product into your skin using light, circular motions. This helps to ensure the product is absorbed properly.

Rehydrate
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated from the inside out after sun exposure.

Avoid further sun exposure
Try to avoid additional sun exposure, especially if your skin is already sunburned or irritated. Remember, the impacts of sun exposure can be lasting, so make sure to protect yourself each time your head out.
