Ask the expert: How to solve all of mum’s hair challenges
Dyson’s unique technology means its hair styling tools are adept at solving common hair dilemmas without using extreme heat that can cause damage.

Healthy, shiny and beautifully styled hair no longer requires an appointment. Dyson brings its world-famous expertise with manipulating airflow to a range of hair tools that do the hard work for you, making styling all hair types easy whilst helping to protect the health of the hair.

Using knowledge gleaned from its astounding £120 million ($231 million) investment into research and development over a number of years, a team of Dyson engineers and experts around the world meticulously consider every aspect of hair science to produce industry-leading hair styling options including the Dyson Corrale™ Straightener and the Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer.

This Mother’s Day, we asked which hair challenges you’d like to make easier for your mum. With tips from top stylist and Dyson Styling Ambassador Michael Beel, these game-changing hair tools can provide the perfect solutions.

How can she make straightened hair look fresh and modern?

Not only is it cordless, which means it’s much easier to manoeuvre around your head, the Dyson Corrale™ Straightener has plenty of versatility while styling, meaning you can straighten, create curls or simply smooth hair while keeping some soft movement and shape. Its unique flexing copper plates shape to gather hair and give a smooth pass over strands rather than skipping or tugging.

“The flexing plates make it easier to manipulate and control the hair so you don’t over straighten and make the hair look limp,” explains Beel. “Unless you have super-curly hair, most people actually only need to straighten mid lengths and ends. Avoiding the root area also will help maintain any natural volume. I also find if you slightly bevel the ends it helps it sit under and give you that understated French vibe.”

How can she get hair dried faster without feeling like a workout?

The Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer uses the brand’s exclusive Air Multiplier technology to deliver a powerful stream of air that quickly and smoothly dries strands without excess heat. “The Dyson Supersonic™ works faster because it uses Air Multiplier technology,’’ says Beel. “It also weighs less than a standard hair dryer and having the powerful but light Dyson digital V9 motor in the handle gives better weight balance so your arms won’t feel like they’re going to fall off! Drying the hair 80-85% first before styling with the brush will also help on time management and ease.”

How can she get a smoother finish on her blow-dry?

With a number of magnetic styling attachments, the Dyson Supersonic™ can easily achieve the finish you’re after for your hair type. “Use the concentration nozzle, pointing the flow of air down the hair shaft to help keep flyaways and frizz to a minimum,’’ says Beel.

“If you manipulate the hair where you want it when you are ‘rough drying’ at the start, it will give it a much smoother feel. Using a brush in the last 2-3 minutes will help. To finish, pop on the new Flyaway attachment and direct the airflow over the top layers and around the hairline.”

The Flyaway attachment uses airflow and the ‘Coanda effect’ to lift longer stands to the front and cleverly tuck flyaways away, hiding them for a sleek look.

How can she dry curly hair, avoiding frizz?

The Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer comes with a diffuser attachment, designed to disperse air evenly around curls to reduce frizz and provide definition. “The diffuser attachment is a curly-haired person’s best friend, ‘’ says Beel. “Put a little leave-in moisturising cream in the hair, use a wide tooth comb to distribute it and use the hair dryer with the diffuser on low/ medium speed and medium heat and let the heat dry it without touching the curl. This will help with longevity, keeping frizz-free curls looking shiny and healthy.”

Designed to be easy and efficient on all hair types, the Dyson Supersonic™ also comes with a gentle air attachment to style fine hair and for sensitive scalps, and a wide tooth comb attachment to provide another option for curly and textured hair.

How can she modernise the same bob she’s always had?

“We are definitely seeing a trend for embracing and enhancing the natural texture of each person’s hair. I would suggest trying the different attachments that come with the Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer such as the gentle air or diffuser attachments to allow it to help dry in the hair’s natural movement,” says Beel. “Or try cutting in a gently parting ‘bottleneck’ fringe.“

How can she ensure her style will last?

“Always use the cold shot button at the end of styling with the Dyson Supersonic™,” says Beel. “It helps shut the cuticle down, encourages shine and helps your style last longer,” says Michael. “You can also use the Dyson Corrale™ over the top to create smoothness or movement to help with longevity.”

My mum has fine hair that is thinning around the front as she wears it up a lot. What might help improve her hair?

“Excessive heat and lots of tension on hair like this is a big no no.” advises Beel. “I would suggest she avoid tying her hair up super tight, maybe leaving the front out to give her a little softness around the face.  I would also suggest using the gentle air attachment that comes with the Dyson Supersonic™ as it is specifically designed for people with sensitive scalps to help diffuse the flow of air. Using the heat also on a low-medium setting will also help.”

How can she make dull grey hair look more healthy and shiny?

“Again, using the cold shot button on the Dyson Supersonic™ at the end of styling helps with a shinier finish,” says Beel. “Also using the Flyaway attachment over the top of your style once you have finished will push those stubborn grey flyaways to sit under the top layer.”

My mum’s not great with technology. How easy are Dyson’s tools to use?

“They are so easy to use! Select your heat and speed and turn it on,” says Beel “The design process that Dyson invests millions in, ensures that everyone feels confident using them and get the full advantage of their unique differences.”
