In a heartwarming announcement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed his engagement to partner Jodie Haydon on Thursday morning.

Taking to social media, the Prime Minister shared the joyous news alongside a beaming snapshot of the couple, showcasing Haydon’s dazzling engagement ring.

“She said yes,” Albanese wrote in a social media post.

It was accompanied by a smiling snap of him and Haydon, with her showing off a sparkling engagement ring.

Love all around

The announcement swiftly garnered an outpouring of well-wishes from across the nation, with colleagues from Albanese’s government joining in the celebration.

“Love is a beautiful thing. I’m so happy for you both!” Foreign Minister Penny Wong wrote.

“Congratulations Albo and Jodie. Jodie is a lovely person, and you’re both very lucky to have each other. You really outdid us all on Valentine’s Day,” wrote Melbourne MP Peter Khalil.

Another Victorian colleague, Josh Burns chimed in with: “Woop woop! Congratulations boss.”

How did they meet?

Albanese and Haydon crossed paths at a business event in Melbourne in early 2020, during his tenure as opposition leader.

Their connection blossomed over their mutual love for the South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL team, eventually leading to a friendship forged over drinks.

Residing in Albanese’s inner-Sydney electorate of Grayndler, they enjoyed one of their initial dates at Newtown’s Young Henrys brewery.

Albanese was previously married to former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt for 19 years. They split in January 2019, and have an adult son,  Nathan.

It will be a first marriage for 45-year-old Haydon.
