There are many different kinds of maps. Part science, part artistic design, the map as a concept is complex and ever changing, encompassing a range of different forms of graphic expression and display.
New book Map (Phaidon) brings together maps from many ages and many cultures on a cross-section of themes – from the first attempts at scientific cartography by the Greeks and the scroll maps of East Asia to the complex networks of today’s social media – not to mention this ink, pencil and watercolour map entitled View of the World from 9th Avenue by Saul Steinberg. In addition to being spectacularly beautiful, the images are a fascinating glimpse into how cartography has shifted, changed and developed through time.
