Ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20, in a rare statement on a policy issue, US first lady Melania Trump has weighed in on the immigration crisis taking place at America’s borders.

Not singing the same tune as her husband Donald Trump, the first lady’s spokesperson issued the following statement on her behalf: “Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform,” her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said. “She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.”

At the same time, former first lady, Lady Laura Bush has condemned a controversial policy that splits up families who illegally enter the country at the Mexican border. In an article for the Washington Post, Bush described the separation of children from their parents as cruel, immoral and heart-breaking.

This comes as President Trump and his administration further crack down on immigration to the US.

Trump’s latest policy decision charges every adult caught crossing the border illegally with federal crimes, whether they are parents or not. Previous regulations saw those attempting to enter the US with children referred to immigration courts.
