Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes the coast of Jamaica

A massive earthquake has struck 117 kms from the coastal town of Lucea in Jamaica. The quake, which struck at around 2 pm local time, was at a depth of 10 kms. A second earthquake, measuring 6.1 magnitudes, hit just two hours later.

A tsunami warning issued for parts of the Caribbean has since been lifted. Waves as high as 1 meter in Jamaica, Belize, Cuba, Mexico and the Cayman Islands are possible, says the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

People in many Jamaican towns report “strong shaking” and tremors were felt as far away as Miami, Florida. It is not yet known the extent of damages or injuries.

Footage from the Cayman Islands shows sinkholes opening up after the earthquake.
