Inside the issue: STYLE Spring 2023

INSIDE THE ISSUE STYLE SPRING 23
Spring has sprung and it's time to get inspired for the new season. Optimism plays a key role with fresh and uplifting ideas to adopt in design, fashion, beauty and more.

“This issue is filled with stories conveying positive sentiments we associate with spring, particularly in our culture section, as we bring you stories from amazing people who must be admired for their bright outlooks on life,” says Editor Ashley Nolan.

Bidding winter farewell, we’re ready to get out and explore, from new dining destinations locally to modern cities worth adding to an itinerary. A new breeze blows through our home and design offerings too, as we embrace cool, clean and calming interiors and textiles indicative of the season ahead and there is plenty of fashion, beauty and accessory inspiration to help you get prepared for a warm sunny season too.

Spring STYLE Covers 2023

Choose from two covers – Dua Lipa, gracing our lives with upbeat, disco-tinged beats while leading with a confident, cool and colorful approach to beauty and style, or an ode to Scandi living with its refined and clean aesthetic and reverence for careful consideration of objects and placement.

DESIGN

Dive into our stylish home features, exploring an escape in the Irish countryside, where a reimagined period farmhouse hides a secret contemporary annex with showstopping and surprising sculptural details as well as providing a calming oasis away from the hustle and bustle. We also visit a jaw-dropping retro-mod space pod house (it has to be seen to be believed!) and introduce new home design elements inspired by the chic, minimalist Scandi aesthetic.

CULTURE

Touching on the theme of how art imitates life – and often springs from adversity – we bring you the latest work from Yuki Kihara, whose triumphant Venice Biennale presentation Paradise Camp considered what utopia looks like for fa’afafine and fa’afatama of Samoa, and who continues to shine a light on these communities. We chat to Hayley Sproull, who finds the bright side in her various health ailments by creating comedy out of them and meet bassist and jazz composer Umar Zakaria who finds inspiration for his compositions from an inspiring optimistic perspective.

BEAUTY

Take a leaf out of our beauty pages and refresh your routine with the season’s top product picks and tips that focus on lush, hydrated skin, innovative ingredients, pared-back essentials and joyful hues. We also meet the new breed of local luxury beauty entrepreneurs finding success both here and abroad with their focus on natural ingredients and sensorial formulas and talk to Violette, the French makeup artist introducing her line of expressive makeup and skincare. Learn about the latest ingredients you need to make your hair shine with good health.

ACCESSORIES

The joy and promise of an engagement is an undoubtedly special time in your life, so delight in our edit of the most desirable engagement ring trends alongside some tips on what to look for and how to approach a bespoke ring creation. We look at the season’s striking timepieces making waves and introduce you to Louis Vuitton’s future icon, the covetable new GO-14 bag.

FASHION

Parisian playfulness is on show as we reveal a selection of Plan de Paris pieces from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Spring-Summer 2023 collection for Christian Dior, touch on the arrival of Pharrell Williams and his first Louis Vuitton collection and reimagine what a working wardrobe means with a reworking of the traditional office ensemble, adding a fun, modern twist. We also hear about the arrival of a key boutique bringing an edit of edgy, creative and cool globally renown labels to Dunedin.

CONCIERGE

Nestled on the edge of the Martinborough Terrace, new cellar door dining destination The Runholder is a haven for culinary enthusiasts and beverage connoisseurs alike. Want to be the first to dine, shop or stay at Auckland’s new hot spots? We run down the new openings to know and what to try first. Further afield, an exploration of US city Washington, DC proves that it has much to offer beyond its many famous monuments and museums and the little city of San Sebastián punches well above its weight when it comes to superb places to eat and drink like a local.

STYLE Spring 2023 is on sale Monday 18 September – available in stores and online here.
