Bags that one! The most-wanted handbags of the season

Bags that one! The most-wanted handbags of the season
All the hip 'it' bags of the season, from elegant and slim purses, to giant, slouchy carry-alls.

If you’re considering what to add to your wardrobe this season, you’ll likely want it to work hard.

That means items that you can wear every day, with every outfit, but they still help you feel pulled-together and stylish. One way to do that is to update your handbag.

On a cost-per-wear basis, there’s little that can beat a great bag, except perhaps for sunglasses, and even then you’re generally relying on the weather to be in your favour for an outing!

L-R: Gucci Jackie Bag; Louis Vuitton Side Trunk PM; Dior Medium Lady D-Joy Bag.

Of course the top luxury labels and fashion houses are always ready to assist with a parade of new-season’s shapes and colours.

So what’s worth carrying now? There are a few common themes showing up in must-have bags.

Midsize bags with short handles made to tuck neatly over the shoulder are still hot property.

L-R: Prada Buckle bag; The Row N/S Park large suede tote; Miu Miu Ivy bag

Minimalist details and clean lines are plentiful but for those that love a bit of playful razzle dazzle, there’s plenty to excite. For example, chain straps and detailing, bold crystal embellishment or gold or silver metallic finishes, all showing up in hot styles to carry.

L-R: Khaite Medium Olivia Hobo; Bottega Veneta Large Hop Bag; Loewe Raffia Puzzle Fold Tote;

Spacious designs (ludicrously capacious-sized, even) with a bit of boho are also coming through for the northern summer, some with textural natural finishes like raffia and some in slouchy but sleek, oversized leather.

When it comes to colour though, there’s little more popular than red. Gucci is leading the way with its signature Rosso Ancora hue, but there are plenty more options, from bright lipstick-red to deep burgundy, on offer.

L-R: Balenciaga Rodeo Medium bag; Acne Studios Multipocket bag; Givenchy Medium Voyou bag

Gucci has revamped the ‘Jackie’ bag, delivering more than a pinch of ’60s spirit. No surprise, since it’s named after Jackie Kennedy, who loved the 1961 original. The larger style hugs the shoulder and is roomy enough for all the essentials while the new mini ‘Jackie Notte’ version with chain strap is perfect for after dark.

Louis Vuitton offers a cool, boxy take on a shoulder bag with its ‘Side Trunk PM’. Though it has soft leather construction, it mimics the shape of the French house’s famous travel trunks and comes in the perfect caramel hue to wear with the season’s neutrals.

L-R: Dries Van Noten clutch; Proenza Schouler Flip bag; Jacquemus Le Petit Calino mini leather bag

Dior’s elongated Lady D-Joy Bag is the perfect way to hit the mark for longer barrel or extended shape bags. With the classic ‘Cannage’ topstitching and D.I.O.R. charms, it’s unlikely to date like other versions, too.

Already being seen on stars like Dua Lipa, Chloë Sevigny and Lily James, Prada’s roomy Buckle bag is also shaping up to be one of the season’s hits.

Finally, Balenciaga’s Rodeo bag gives off the perfect insouciant attitude with its tilted silhouette and intentionally open front compartment. Not to mention the jumble of bag charms the brand is also offering to decorate it.
