How to protect your skin during a long-haul flight
Take care of your skin during long-haul flights and avoid pesky breakouts when you arrive at your destination.

When you jet off for a well-deserved getaway, it’s unlikely your skin will be at the forefront of your mind.

However, a long-haul flight can wreak havoc on your skin so it is worth giving it more thought. How can you keep your skin in tip-top condition on those long plane journeys? Cecilia Ross, facialist and founder of Cecilia London, has the lowdown.

Go make-up free

You should go without make-up to avoid blocked pores, which could lead to breakouts.

“As soon as you’re on the plane I’d recommend removing your make-up as thoroughly as possible. A double cleanse that removes make-up and balances your skin is ideal,” Cecilia explains.

“Many brands produce minis which are ideal for taking on board and it’s a great chance to spend your time on board wisely and kickstart your holiday with self-care.”

Hydrate

Hydration is key because this will keep your skin from feeling dry and tight during the flight.

“On a flight when your skin is prone to dryness, I’d recommend adding a moisturising hyaluronic-based gel or serum, to provide your skin with the moisture it needs without using anything too heavy to clog the pores,” Cecilia states.

Food and drinks

Make sure to stay hydrated on the inside as well as the outside. Cecilia recommends drinking plenty of water and eating foods with a high water content.

“When it comes to food choices, pick items with a high water content which will also help with dehydration, such as watermelon and strawberries, which make refreshing choices that will also quench your thirst and provide your body with a boost of antioxidants,” the expert shares.

Apply SPF

You might think your skin is safe from UV rays while on a plane, but this isn’t true! The sun can still reach your skin, particularly if you have a window seat.

“UV radiation can be just as high as when they are on ground level, so ensure you apply good quality SPF 50,” the expert warns. “As well as applying on your face, I’d also recommend applying lip balm and hand cream that contains SPF and will help with hydrating those areas too.”

Post-flight cleanse

Once you step off the plane, you should focus on “rejuvenating” your skin.

“Cleanse your face as soon as you reach your hotel or even better right after landing. If you’re prone to breakouts and have oily skin, I’d recommend applying a salicylic acid after cleansing,” suggests Cecilia.
