How to Buy Jewellery for Someone Special

How to Buy Jewellery for Someone Special
We find out how to master a memorable gift from the experts.

Jewellery makes the perfect gift no matter what time of the year it is but knowing exactly what to buy for that someone special isn’t always that straightforward. We spoke to the experts at Stewart Dawsons to get the lowdown on buying the right jewellery as a gift.

Jewellery is an unforgettable gift. Where should the novice jewellery gift buyer begin when looking for that something special?

For someone who is an inexperienced jewellery gift buyer, we would recommend for the customer to visit one of our stores. We have 15 stores across New Zealand which includes passionate and professional staff who can provide the customer with the best options, whether it be an engagement ring, Christmas gift or just a general gift.

White gold, yellow gold or rose gold? How do I know what’s right for my recipient?

We would recommend for the customer to select an item which the gift receiver would usually wear, for example, if they predominately wear yellow gold then the customer would be better to purchase a yellow gold gift. Another way in which we identify the correct gold for the customer is by skin colour. Generally, sterling silver or white gold suits fair skin, yellow gold is recommended for olive skin and rose gold would be recommended to a customer who is trend focused.

How about gemstones? What should I consider when picking out one as a gift? Is favourite colour a good place to start?
Yes, when considering which gemstones to purchase as a gift favourite colour is always a good place to start. Different types of gemstones also reflect different months of the year. For example, if you are born in February your birthstone is Amethyst.
