How to Avoid Bed Bugs When Travelling: From Hotels to Trains
Avoiding bed bugs, even on public transport, requires vigilance and a few precautions.

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers, and they can be found in various public places, including buses, trains, and even hotels.

Here are some tips to help you steer clear of bed bugs while travelling:

  1. Research and Read Reviews: Before booking a hotel, read reviews from previous guests. Look specifically for mentions of bed bugs or cleanliness issues. Check reputable travel websites and forums for reports of bed bug infestations at the hotel.
  2. Inspect Seating: Before sitting down on a bus or train seat, take a moment to inspect it visually. Look for any signs of bed bugs, such as small reddish-brown bugs or tiny black dots (fecal spots). Pay attention to seams, crevices, and corners where bed bugs may hide.
  3. Choose Your Seat Wisely: If possible, select seats made of materials that are less likely to harbour bed bugs. Hard plastic or metal seats are less conducive to bed bug infestations than upholstered seats.
  4. Keep Your Belongings Off the Floor: Placing your bags and personal items on the floor can increase the risk of bed bugs hitching a ride. Instead, use overhead compartments or keep your belongings on your lap or beside you.
  5. Use Protective Covers: Consider carrying a small, portable seat cover or blanket with you when using public transport. These covers can create a barrier between you and potentially infested seats.
  6. Be Cautious When Using Public Transportation Facilities: Bed bugs can hide in waiting areas, benches, and other transportation facilities. Avoid sitting directly on benches and inspect them before use.
  7. Launder Your Clothes: After using public transport, especially if you suspect exposure to bed bugs, wash your clothes and personal items in hot water and dry them on high heat. This can help kill any potential hitchhikers.
  8. Use Luggage Racks: Avoid placing your luggage directly on the bed or floor. Instead, use luggage racks or the bathroom counter to keep your belongings off the ground.
  9. Travel Light: Minimise the number of personal items you carry with you. Bed bugs can easily hide in backpacks, purses, and luggage, so reducing clutter can lower the risk.
  10. Stay Informed: Be aware of any reports of bed bug infestations on public transport in your area. Local news and online forums may provide useful information.
  11. Report Infestations: If you encounter bed bugs on public transport, report the issue to the transportation authority. They may take measures to address the problem.
  12. Avoid Bringing Bed Bugs Home: After travelling, inspect your belongings and yourself for any signs of bed bugs. If you suspect exposure, take precautions to avoid bringing bed bugs into your home. Immediately wash and dry your clothes and vacuum your belongings.

Remember that while bed bugs can be found in various public places, infestations can occur anywhere. However, being vigilant and taking preventive measures can help reduce the risk of encountering these unwanted pests.
