With around 16 million passengers passing through it every year, Auckland Airport is the largest, most exciting airport in New Zealand. Whether you’re travelling for work or taking a cherished holiday with family or friends, here’s a guide to making the most of what’s on offer at the international terminal’s duty free shops and eateries.

One of the best kept travel secrets in the world of travelling is how accessible and impressive Auckland Airport’s international terminal duty free is, as there are so many great brands and shops. The best advice is to arrive early when checking in so you can enjoy the wide range and the personalised service from experts and brand ambassadors who work in duty free. Importantly, the experts take time to talk to you and if you aren’t quite sure about that gift for your family or friends, this group of professionals always seem to have the solution.

Shopping for gifts to bring home is a delight.

Food-wise, you can take a culinary trip around the world before you board your flight as the food options are varied and vast. You can sample the very best cuisine on the global stage all under one roof, including many food options for children, and plenty of snacks.

The range of New Zealand-made brands is impressive and makes for a great shopping experience, as you’ll be sure to find that perfect Kiwi-made gift for that someone special at home or a purchase just for you. Auckland Airport’s international terminal is a unique experience for families travelling, just make sure you leave enough time to enjoy everything on offer.

Enjoy a meal together before hopping on your flight.

Dining

Sample the very best cuisines from around the world. There’s wood-fired pizza from Little Italy Pizza Kitchen, delicious authentic Japanese fare at Hayama Sushi including some of the best ramen around, Pork Belly Con Cola Tacos and Frida’s Margaritas at Mexico, and my all-time favourite – the BBQ Bacon Double Cheeseburger at Better Burger. Check out celebrity chef Al Brown’s Best Ugly Bagels pastrami Yodi bagel, best enjoyed at breakfast, lunch and dinner! Popo Dumplings brings Asian street food alive and features authentic steamed dumplings. Try the wonton soup – you won’t be disappointed.

Fresh, locally sourced, sustainable ingredients are on the menu at Better Burger.

Experiences

Duty free has become more than just about perfume and spirits. There are now wine and whiskey tastings to help you learn more about the range of products on offer as well as a complete wall of New Zealand wine so you will be spoilt for choice. Grooming specialists can advise on the best products to travel with and buy as gifts at Kiwi brand Triumph & Disaster. My pick is the Gameface Moisturiser – the perfect travelling companion. You can enjoy a hand massage at Jo Malone while getting expert skincare advice, and the M.A.C Cosmetics mini makeover gives you the opportunity to arrive glowing after your flight. The world’s most popular Brazilian beauty brand, Sol de Janeiro, is also on offer.

Be sure to leave time before your flight to try out new perfumes.

Shopping

Auckland Airport is where I like to buy my favourite gin in the world, Scapegrace, one of New Zealand’s finest. There is a wonderful range of Comvita Mānuka Honey products that also make great gifts. Also check out Cookie Time and their unique cookie tins – the Kiwiana Map tin is my favourite. Saben is the perfect Kiwi brand to find that cool unique leather bag that will have friends talking, and they also have a range of dreamy accessories on offer to get your holiday started. For the kids it’s all about LEGO, the range is excellent with small sets for the plane and more complex sets for adults. In the new home section, you can buy the latest GHD Hair straighteners. And for those with a sweet tooth head to the Whittaker’s Chocolate Emporium or you can buy a giant Toblerone bar that will keep the family happy for hours, along with a magazine to enjoy throughout the journey.

Kids will want to check out the range of LEGO available.
