Margot Robbie towers as a giant Barbie doll, Ryan Gosling looks fierce in fingerless gloves and Barbie world gleams in bubblegum pink. There’s a lot packed into the first Barbie trailer.
Robbie is joined by Gosling in the film, who will be playing Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken.
Director Greta Gerwig, of Little Women and Ladybird fame, is directing the film and given her stellar track record, the Barbie movie has plenty of talent to back it up.
Joining Gerwig is her long-time creative partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, The Meyerowitz Stories) is the co-writer on the script with her.
As to the plot, not much is known, though according to IMDB it follows “a doll living in ‘Barbieland’ expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world”.
In April, Warner Bros shared an image of Robbie dressed as the iconic doll driving a hot pink Corvette, and Gosling with bleach-blonde hair.
In an interview with Variety in July 2021, Robbie said playing the iconic doll “comes with a lot of baggage” and “a lot of nostalgic connections”.
“But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” she said.
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.’”
Barbie is slated for a release date of 21 July 2023.
