Melissa McCarthy has defended her friend Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, saying she receives hatred because people are threatened by smart, interesting women.
Speaking to Page Six, the actress described the royal as “wonderful” and “awesome”.
“It bums me out for every woman and every person, that for no reason people just like to attack,” McCarthy said.
“A smart, interesting woman that has her own life, for some reason, is incredibly threatening to some people.
“I always think, how inspiring! I’ve never once been threatened by someone who is amazing. I just think how inspiring. It’s really on the people throwing the hate.”
McCarthy worked with Meghan in 2021 for a video celebrating the duchess’s 40th birthday and launching a mentorship program called 40×40.
McCarthy told Access Hollywood at the time that she found the royal couple to be “so sweet and funny”.
“I just found them very inspiring,” she said. “They’re carving out their own lives. They’re carving out their lives for their kids.”
