Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, has undergone surgery for breast cancer.

Ferguson, 63, was given the diagnosis following a recent, routine mammogram screening and has undergone successful surgery, her spokesperson has confirmed to British media outlets.

Following the recent surgery it was reported she spent several days in hospital before being discharged. She is now understood to be recovering at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, the home she shares with former husband Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

It was not confirmed whether she is expected to undergo further treatment.

“Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening, the spokesperson told the Daily Telegraph.

“She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully.

“The Duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her that the prognosis is good. She is now recuperating with her family.”

The reports also mentioned her “immense gratitude” to all the medical staff who have supported her in recent days, including those that identified her illness, which was otherwise symptom free. The statement said she believes her experience “underlines the importance of regular screening.”

According to the reports it is expected Ferguson will discuss details of her diagnosis in an imminent episode of Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah, her new podcast with news entrepreneur Sarah Thomson.
