Dreaming of Santorini
Dreaming of Santorini
Known for its picturesque white and blue architecture, dazzling beaches and unique cuisine, Santorini, Greece is the ideal location for a summer getaway. One of the Cyclades islands, Santorini has an unusually rugged landscape, the result of a severe volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC. Its idyllic villages perch on multi-coloured cliff-tops high above the electric blue sea, where 1.5 million tourists flock each year to experience the island’s relaxed, welcoming and restorative atmosphere.
If you still aren’t convinced as to why you should visit Santorini, here are 5 more reasons.
- Because of its volcanic history, Santorini’s beaches boast a myriad of coloured pebbles in black, red and white. These, combined with the warm, clear turquoise waters create a striking visual. While the island’s most famous beach is Red Beach, Perissa and Kamari are also popular drawcards. For a more secluded swim, ask a local where their favourite spot is.
- Santorini might be beautiful by day, but sunset is where it really shines. A view from the waterfront or cliff-top will give you that flawless Instagram shot and remind you of how incredible nature is, as you watch the sky turn golden over the island’s breathtaking panoramas. The village of Oia is the most common spot for sunset viewing, so avoid the area if you don’t want to jostle with hundreds of tourists.
- Greece is known for its charming whitewashed buildings with bright blue rooftops and shutters. Positioned every-which-way possible around narrow cobblestoned alleyways, the architecture of Santorini is like nothing else. You’ll feel worlds away from home as you enjoy the pristine surroundings of this island paradise. While Santorini’s two main towns, Fira and Oia, are must-visits, we recommend checking out Firostefáni and Imerovígli while you’re at it.
- Contrasted against the white and blue of Santorini’s buildings are bright plants of every shade. Garden boxes line the walkways and heavy white pots with colourful flowers are squeezed into all available spaces. Palm trees, succulents and cacti abound, but it’s the vibrant fuschia of Santorini’s bougainvillea that steals the show. Thanks to the island’s dryness, the bougainvillea blooms year-round, making a sight for sore eyes as it tumbles over buildings and balconies.
- Greek food is some of the best and most interesting in the world. Santorini offers all of the country’s traditional cuisine, from Spanakopita and Baklava to Moussaka and Tzatziki. Make sure you try the Dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves) and Tomatokeftedes (Santorini tomato fritters) for an authentic eating experience. Don’t miss out on a steaming mug of Ellinikos (Greek coffee), either.
