Dame Maggie Smith has a brand new role under her belt, but it's not what you might think.

With an extensive career in film, television and theatre over seven decades, the 88-year-old is one of Britain’s most recognisable and prolific actresses.

But as the new face of luxury Spanish fashion house Loewe, Smith is testing the fashion waters.

Smith, best known for her legendary roles as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, delighted fans with her appearance in a selection of campaign images for the designer label’s spring 2024 pre-collection.

The photos show the octogenarian wearing pieces from the range including a two-toned shaggy fur coat, a navy blue silk shirt dress and a striking black and white layered dress. She’s also seen clutching the brand’s latest accessories including a forest green version of Loewe’s sought-after ‘Puzzle’ bag.

Photographed by legendary celebrity and fashion photographer Juergen Teller and imagined by the brand’s British creative director, Jonathan Anderson, Smith is one of selection of appearances for Loewe by notable faces for the campaign.

She joins actresses Dakota Fanning and Greta Lee, The Crown actor Josh O’Connor, South Korean singer Taeyong, model FeiFei Sun, British artist Rachel Jones, and actor Mike Faist, as the new faces for Loewe SS24.

A selection of images of each of the stars was unveiled by Jonathan Anderson on his own personal Instagram, and the reaction was enthusiastic from fans including a number of fellow stars.

Among the plethora of comments on the post saying “Obsessed,” “Major” and “Iconic”, Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy posted ‘Are you kidding me’, Kaia Gerber said ‘wow’ on the post and Julianne Moore added a simple fire emoji.

The brand is known for it’s similar campaigns and has worked with variety of well-known faces on its promotional images, with previous stars including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jamie Dornan and Korean singer HyunA.
