Bucket bags are the handbag style to carry into 2024

Bucket bags are the handbag style to carry into 2024
Looking for a new bag to carry into the new year? You'd do well to make it a bucket bag.

The iconic and roomy shape, beloved in the 70, 90s and a staple over the years in between and since then, has made a major resurgence this season.

Not only lining the runways and shelves of top designers, but celebrities like Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes and Meghan Markle are snapping up the shape too.

The style has a storied history and is said to have been first designed by French fashion and accessories house Louis Vuitton in 1932. Upon request, Gaston-Louis Vuitton specifically designed the bucket bag to safely hold and transport champagne bottles without breaking them. A noble quest, one which demonstrates the sturdy nature of the flat-bottomed bags, although they’re more likely to hold phone, keys and wallet these days (but by all means, give it a whirl!).

In the 70s the shape made a comeback and again in the 90s, its carry-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink volume and easy-closure tie-pull making it a great every day option.

In 2013 Mansur Gavriel created the ‘it’ bag everyone wanted and has recently released an eco-conscious version, made of durable, apple-leather material.

This season, designers including Bottega Veneta, Hermés and Ulla Johnson showed the style on their runways and there is plenty to choose from in stores right now.

What to look for? A luxe glossy leather or leather-alternative in black, tan or oxblood with a smooth or slightly textured finish.
