Just as we get into the swing of red being the colour of the season, there’s a new hue on the way for autumn.
It’s actually not too far away from the bold scarlet shade we’ve been loving for summer, and plenty of red accessories are still sticking around.
But judging by what’s on the runways, and what designers have been dressing A-List stars in for this month’s red carpets, a far deeper hue that ranges from burgundy to oxblood is emerging.
In some places it’s being referred to as ‘black cherry’ or ‘merlot’, more appealing names than ‘oxblood’ to be sure. They simply serve to indicate the rich, sumptuous depth of pigment that makes it perfect for our wardrobes Down Under come the cooler weather.
It is everywhere on fashion week runways, with Gucci, Tom Ford, and Hermès, all picking it as essential for the new season.
How to wear it? In expensive-looking fabrics pared back with neutral shades like black or camel, as well as head-to toe, but combining contrasting textures like patent leather or sequins and silk.
A masterclass was seen at this week’s Bafta’s where Cate Blanchett wore a floor-length column gown from Louis Vuitton (above) in luxe crepe jersey with leather accents.
Daisy Edgar-Jones too, rocked one of Gucci’s runway standouts, a Gucci Ancora Notte dress in ‘Rosso Ancora’ a new colour introduced and coined by the brand specifically for the upcoming season. The shade is used by the Italian fashion house in items from suiting for men and women to glossy patent leather shoes, handbags and even sunglasses. If that’s not an indication it will be influential, we don’t know what is!
If the colour isn’t your thing outfit-wise, there is plenty to choose from in burgundy accessories. Saint Laurent has updated a number of its iconic handbag shapes in the wine-shade, The Row’s minimalist Margaux 15 Bag also comes in the hue and Bottega Veneta and Loewe both have brand new releases in the covetable shade that will carry you right through winter with style.
Your other option? Make like Dua Lipa and embrace a chocolate cherry hair colour instead.
