Captain’s Call

“You’ve got to give England credit, they came out and started extremely well. We just couldn’t get into the game,” said departing All Blacks captain, Kieran Read.

“I think we will look at that game there will be so many ‘what if?’ and things we could’ve done better. On a stage like this you can’t afford it and it cost us.”

England skipper Owen Farrell was overjoyed after reaching the World Cup final and points to his team’s preparation as laying the foundation for the shock result.

“We felt like we prepared well and we started the game well,” he said.

“All these big games, teams get physical. We go after each other from kick off, and we knew that it would come our way and that we were playing that game to.”

“We’ve got a number of ways of playing. We’ve got a big powerful pack that can use the ball. Tonight we did that well.”

From the Coaches

England’s coach, Aussie Eddie Jones opened his speech in Japanese, then praised  All Black’s coach Steve Hansen and Captain Kieran Read.

“We were playing against a great team today,” he said.

“Steve Hansen is a great coach and Kieran Read is a great captain. We had to dig deep.

“We knew we’d have to come off the line hard and keep taking away time and space from them.

“We managed to do that and caused a few errors and we maybe had a few lucky bounces and got the result.

“I think World Cups are always about defence and our best form of attack is our defence. We create opportunities through our defence to attack.”

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen graciously congratulated the opposition – “England played a tremendous game of footy… At the end of the day, that’s what rugby’s about so well done to them.”
