Cross Counter wins the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse

Cross Counter (23) has won the 2018 Melbourne Cup, beating Marmelo (9) and A Prince of Arran (17).

It’s was a wet start to Melbourne Cup day at Flemington on Tuesday as more than 46mm of rain fell and the crowds who turned up early for the festivities were forced to wade through pooling water.

Early on in the morning, the track was downgraded to heavy but later lifted back to soft as it drained after the rain. The weather, which improved dramatically as the day went on has changed the betting market quite significantly, punters say. Yucatan and Magic Circle were joint-favourites at $6.50 before the race started.

When the race kicked off at 3pm local time, Runaway was an early leader out front with a lap to run, and still in the lead with 800m to run. However, Cross Counter was to take to the line first, winning the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

Marmelo came in second and A Prince Of Arran third.

As far as Melbourne Cup’s go, commentators are calling it a great race, with an exciting finish.

Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy is elated. “What a thrill,” he says, before letting out an enormous holler, the Guardian reports.
