Scooping ice-cream at Baskin-Robbins, waiting tables, and helping seniors living in assisted-living facilities are just some of the minimum-wage jobs President Obama enjoyed before finishing his law degree.

The US President and First Lady, who work at a book binding shop in her college days, want to pass on the sentiment to their children, as revealed ni an interview with Parade Magazine (via Reuters).

I think every kid needs to get a taste of what it’s like to do that real hard work,” Michelle Obama said in an interview with Parade magazine, slated to run on Sunday.

“We are looking for opportunities for them to feel as if going to work and getting a paycheck is not always fun, not always stimulating, not always fair,” the president said. “But that’s what most folks go through every single day.”

While the first couple has done their best to shield their daughters Malia (16) and Sasha (13) out of the public eye, the Obamas were happy to chat about their daughters’ future in the upcoming press piece.

Later in the interview, the first couple talked about living on the second floor of Michelle’s mum, Marian Robinson, after law school, driving a $1000 used car and taking out student loans.

They also acknowledged that their careers gave them the chance to earn good incomes and negotiate family leave when they needed it – a luxury that most minimum-wage workers do not have.
