A new era: Watch the dramatic trailer for ‘The Crown’ season five

The highly-anticipated fifth season introduces a new host of actors as the royal family faces tensions and turmoil.

After almost two years, The Crown is set to return for its fifth season. In a special behind-the-scenes featurette, The Crown season five’s new cast share their experiences taking over the royal family’s story. The new season sees Imelda Staunton playing Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Dominic West as Prince Charles and Jonathan Pryce as the Duke of Edinburgh.

In the featurette, Debicki talks about playing Diana in the wake of her marriage to Charles breaking down. “She becomes more removed from the royal family, that encourages her to grow other pieces of her and attempt to recoup control.”

The new season picks up in the 1990’s, as the royal family is presented with their “biggest challenge to date” and major political and personal events shape Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

One of the major plot lines in The Crown season five sees Charles and Diana “presenting a constitutional crisis of the monarchy” as their relationship breaks down. “Diana decides to take control of her own narrative, breaking with family protocol to publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and exposes the cracks in the House of Windsor.”

Meanwhile, as Queen Elizabeth approaches 40 years on the throne, she is faced with “new challenges on the horizon”, including the collapse of the Soviet Union and transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong.

The Crown season five also introduces Jonathan Pryce as The Duke of Edinburgh, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Timothée Sambor and Senan West as Prince William and Teddy Hawley and Will Powell as Prince Harry.

Season five launches globally on Netflix on 9 November 2022.
