The warmer months can easily become too hot for a strenuous outdoor workout. While this shouldn’t be enough to deter you from donning the trainers and heading outside, it’s important to take measures to protect yourself from heat stroke or other problems.

Hydrate

When the temperature rises, maintaining hydration is critical – particularly if you’re active and outdoors. Keeping well hydrated helps the heart pump blood to the muscles, which helps them work efficiently. How much water you need depends on a number of factors, but thirst is not always the best indicator – if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, warn most experts. Drink plenty of fluids (preferably filtered water) before, during and after any physical activity to maintain salt-water balance. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages that dehydrate the body.

Exercise smarter, not harder.

Choose the coolest parts of the day, like early in the morning or after sunset, for your workouts. It’s also important to decrease the intensity and duration of exercise during soaring temperatures. Pools and air-conditioned gyms are a great place to escape the heat.

Dress appropriately

Wear minimal amounts of clothing that is lightweight, and light coloured in breathable fabrics like cotton to stop you from over-heating. Sun protection is also a must during the hottest parts of the day.

Ease into the season

Allow your body to adapt to the heat by easing into your workout and building up gradual daily exposure as the weather warms up. Acclimatisation usually occurs between four and 14 days.
