Met Gala postponed amid coronavirus outbreak

The Met Gala is the latest high-profile cultural event to be postponed amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Met Gala chairwoman Anna Wintour confirmed in a post to Vogue.com the rumours that the ball would not be going ahead as planned.

“Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will be postponed to a later date,” she wrote.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Museum of Art also confirmed all events through May 15 will be cancelled or postponed.

“The Museum will remain closed through Saturday, April 4. Additionally, the CDC advised over the weekend that there should not be any gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. In deference to this guidance, all programs and events through May 15 will be cancelled or postponed,” read the statement.

The gala raises money for the New York museum’s Costume Institute and opens the its spring exhibition, which will also be delayed.
