Drink Better with Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas: Pinot Noir for Autumn

My expectations are usually very high when I select a bottle of pinot noir from a wine list or the retail shelf. I like to drink excellent wine with purity of fruit and great texture pinosity. Here are six excellent picks for autumn that will meet your expectations too.

Scout Pinot x Pinot 2019, South Island ($38)
A blend of 90 per cent pinot noir and 10 per cent pinot gris – aromas and flavours of sweet raspberry, bing cherries and plums, baking spice and red flowers. Great texture with fine chalky tannins. Floral, fruity and delicious. Buy it here.

Black Estate Netherwood Pinot Noir 2017, North Canterbury ($75)
A beautifully balanced wine with a core of wild red berries and plum. Savoury, mineral, dried herbs and full of energy with palate-grabbing tension, chalky tannins and long detailed finish. Buy it here.

Aurum Estate Pinot Noir 2018 ($38)
Pure fruit expression with aromas of freshly harvested plums, cherries and raspberries. An abundance of fine tannin and freshness, wild flowers, complex, detailed and delicious. Buy it here.

Neck of the Woods Pinot Noir 2017, Central Otago ($39)
Totally captivating wine with flavours of sun-warmed dark red cherry and raspberry, brown baking spices and whispers of wild thyme, stony soils and toasty French oak. A seam of dark rose and violet, fine chalky tannins and long finish. Buy it here.

Mt Edward Pinot Noir 2017 ($47.00)
Smoke and spices, a core of ripe red berries and plums, dry stones and bracken. Palate awakening textures with firm tannins and acidity with contrasting fruit, flowers and mineral layers. Buy it here.

Judge Rock Pinot Noir 2016 ($44)
Immediately intense with fruit power, freshness and panache. There’s vibrato and energy in the texture with chalky tannins and flavours of dried raspberry, red cherry, baking spices and toasty wood. Buy it here.
